"Teaching" of St. Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi (2/6)

The Lamb's blood has it to come to us...The Spirit does not rest in the souls of those who speak poisonous words

About St. Mary Magdalene, it is known that she was a saint of the Holy Spirit, who received Him in all His forms. She often speaks of Him, and with the greatest love and respect.

“The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Word in such a lovely manner that it cannot be expressed.” He is “the breath in the harmony of love” between the Father and the Word; He is, by nature, love that “ignites and melts with love.” “The entire Most Holy Trinity is a burning fire from which this bolt of the Holy Spirit shoots forth, which is one of the three divine Persons, and like a cloud, comes to overshadow our souls. Oh, who has ever seen a cloud descend so beautifully over the river as this loving Spirit does to settle in our souls?” He is like “the gentle breeze,” which, by blowing into “the clouds that cover God's workings, makes that delightful, charming, and sweet water of grace rain down upon the earth.” “He is the distributor of treasures that are in the bosom of the Father, and the treasurer of the workings between the Father and the Word.”

The Holy Spirit has been at work since the creation of “this great machinery of the world,” but is particularly active in the work of redemption. The Holy Spirit caused the Incarnation of the Word. He “took the Word from the bosom of the Father and planted it in the womb of Mary.” “I see this Spirit of purity descending in a motionless movement from the Father and pouring into Mary.” “This Spirit was always with the humanity of the Word, from the beginning of the Incarnation to the return to heaven, and He worked with the incarnate Word everything that He did and accomplished in His humanity.” “The Holy Spirit possessed this holy humanity as His own.” “This Spirit is always marked with the precious seal of the blood of the Word, the slain Lamb, and the Lamb's blood has it to come to us, even though He Himself yearns for it and wants to come.”

Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi gives the Holy Spirit many names that figuratively express various effects of His action. Let us mention at least some of them: dove, cloud, fire, oil, river, pillar, strength, fiery tongues, magnet, eagle, ray, sun, sealed spring, throne, razor, bush, branch, tablets of Moses, arrow, horn, breath, mouth, sound, spear, etc.

Just as He created the humanity of the Word and acted in it, so the Spirit continually shapes His mystical body, the Church, with His presence and lives and acts within it, thus transforming the world. He leads souls to the highest holiness, to “union with God, to the ‘taking in’ of God into oneself, to finding the highest happiness in God.” Such a soul “in the Holy Spirit gives birth to God a thousand times at every step (if He could be born, He who cannot be born). In contact with this Spirit of love, every word, thought, and desire gives birth to Christ. It is no longer just one God, but thousands, thousands of ‘gods,’ one God in essence and in three Persons, but thousands, thousands of ‘gods’ in participation, fellowship, and union.”

The obstacles that prevent the outpouring of the Holy Spirit into the soul are: duplicity of intentions, stubbornness, “the cursed lukewarmness,” lack of humility, and clinging to oneself. The best conditions for receiving the Spirit are: “a simple intention,” “active participation in Christ's love,” “recognition of one's nothingness”; especially the effort for three characteristic traits of the Holy Spirit: purity, truth, holiness. “This Spirit is love and seeks love, and therefore He does not rest in those hearts that do not love, in the souls of those who speak poisonous words, because He truly despises sharp and murmuring tongues, from which He withdraws and flees.” “Like a flying and uplifting eagle, the Holy Spirit takes and carries away the souls that have received Him, and takes them where the Word is.”
