Prayer of St. Catherine of Siena

(† 1380)

Mary, peaceful sea,
giver of peace, fertile land!
You are the new shoot,
upon which the fragrant flower has blossomed,
the Word made flesh,
the only begotten Son of God.

Into you, Mary, fruitful soil, the Word was sown.
Mary, fiery chariot, you carried the Fire,
hidden and veiled by your humanity.
Mary, you are the book,
in which the rule of our life, Jesus, is written.
When I look at you, Mary,
I see the hand of the Holy Spirit,
who shaped the incarnate Word in you,
the only begotten Son of God.

Here lies the dignity of man, for whom God has done so many great things.
Mary, in you the strength and freedom of man is revealed. To you the angel was sent, to announce God's plan and seek your consent: the Son of God descended into your womb only after you freely accepted Him. The Word of the Father waited at the door of your will for you to open it with the words: “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be to me according to your Word!”

Mary, my sweetest love, in you is written the Word that has given us the teaching of life;
To you I flee, Mary, with a request for the betrothed of Jesus
and for the pope, His representative on earth:
Grant him light to be able to accomplish the renewal of the Church.
Strengthen the hearts of your people in unity and incline them to the sweet heart of Christ on earth,
so that they may never oppose Him.
Mary, today is the day of grace, no grace will be denied you,
therefore I urgently and wholeheartedly ask you today, Mary!
