All the movements of pride that you feel within yourself become a fault only when the will agrees with them! You may suffer greatly, but you do not offend the good God. The faults into which you fall, without being aware of them, as you say, undoubtedly reveal the background of self-love, but this is to some extent our fate... What good God asks of you is to never voluntarily linger on any proud thought and to never act under its influence, for that is not good. And even if you discover something like that, there is no need to lose courage, for it is again irritated pride. Like Magdalene, you must "present your wretchedness" at the Master's feet and ask Him to free you. He loves to see a soul that acknowledges its helplessness. Then, as one great saint said, "the abyss of God's immensity faces the abyss of the nothingness" of the creature, and God embraces this nothingness.
