Sometimes, when I read certain spiritual writings, in which perfection is portrayed as surrounded by myriad obstacles and surrounded by many illusions, my poor mind soon gets tired, I close the learned book that gives me a headache and dries up my heart, and I take up the Holy Scripture. Then everything seems clear to me, a single word reveals infinite horizons to my soul, perfection seems easy to me. I see that it is enough to acknowledge my nothingness and to surrender like a child into God's embrace.
(Thérèse of Lisieux, letter to Father Roulland, May 9, 1897)
