Dear sister Olympia,
Excessive grief over our own mistakes is neither harmless nor necessary. Most of the time it hurts us or even destroys us. And it is even worse and completely absurd to destroy ourselves by mourning the mistakes of others. Above all, it means reaching out to the devil and harming our soul.
(John Chrysostom /349–407/, letter from exile, year 404)
