When you pray, there's no need to overdo it.

Do you feel like leaving the church, and yet you stay? All the better! When you pray, there is no need to overdo it. Do not force yourself to fan the hot coals, our Lord does not need oxygen. Remember what Péguy advises! (1) You only need to clean your feet on the mat once. Then enter the church and stay there for an hour. Your feet are as they are. You could also just stay for an hour at the entrance between the holy water fonts, cleaning your shoes over and over again.

(1) Charles Péguy /1873–1914/, French writer, philosopher, and poet; in August 1914, he enlisted in the army and died on September 5, the eve of the Battle of the Marne. Today marks 110 years since his death in the war.

(Father Jerome /1907–1985/, monk of the Trappist monastery in Sept-Fons, Apophthegmata)
