We know and we do not know what we do when we sin. We know that we do evil, that we ravage purity within ourselves, that we commit betrayal of fidelity, freedom, and greatness. However, we do not know the background of this evil, the irreparable consequences it carries, we do not know what freedom, what purity, what greatness it destroys within us. How earnestly we will later wish that such a thing had never happened!
(Cardinal Charles Journet /1891–1975/, The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross)
