Brothers and sisters, there is so much suffering in Ukraine, so much! And I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming Christmas and its celebrations. It is good to celebrate Christmas, to hold parties... but let us lower the level of Christmas spending a bit. Let us have simpler Christmases with more modest gifts and send what we save to the Ukrainian nation, who is in need, who is suffering so much. The people there are hungry, feel the cold, and many are dying because they do not have a doctor or nurse nearby. Let us not forget to experience a peaceful Christmas with the Lord, but with Ukrainians in our hearts. And let us make this specific gesture for them.
(Pope Francis, address at the general audience on December 14, 2022)
