To answer your question: That deep place in the soul is invulnerable, for God dwells there. It is not something you can lose. The emotional perception of God's presence may fade, but the Lord is always present there, for that place is not subject to our highs or lows, let alone external circumstances. (…) The path to this safe place does not lead through acquiring something you do not have, through hard work on yourself or understanding anything (possibly everything!), but rather through removing the barriers that prevent us from giving ourselves completely. These include the desire to "know better than…", lack of trust, the wish for something around us to change, etc.
